The Society has traditionally carried out a variety of projects which have resulted in Society publications.  All of these are available in a variety of printed or digital formats in our online shop GenFair

A significant and important ongoing project for the Society is the recording of monumental inscriptions for the county.

Monumental inscriptions, or memorial inscriptions, are the inscribed words on tombs and memorials found in churchyards and churches. Inscriptions can also be found on war memorials, outdoor furniture such as park benches, and in non-Anglican burial grounds and municipal cemeteries.

The Society has concentrated on transcribing memorials that are not in municipal cemeteries. These records are available to purchase through our monumental inscriptions series of booklets, and to members as a look-up service.

Each monumental inscription booklet records memorials as they are found, with maps, plans and a surname index included to aid location. Other memorials in the vicinity, such as war memorials and benches, are also recorded where they exist.

Since we have been recording, many headstones in churchyards have deteriorated to the point that our records now provide the only evidence of the original inscription.

How you can help

We very much welcome volunteers to help with transcribing the remaining churchyards and graveyards.  If you are currently working on, or planning to work on a graveyard on our to do list then do please let us know so that we don't duplicate effort.  Normally you do need to get permission from the Church Wardens before starting transcribing, and it is worth noting that old churchyards can have trip hazards where graves have sunk or kerbstones are obscured, so do be aware of health and safety.  We can include you on our organised monumental inscription sessions and provide training on deciphering the meaning and wording on the head and kerb stones.
